Anxiety

What is anxiety?

Anxiety is a normal reaction to stressful situations. You may feel occasional anxiety before a big event or because of relationship or health problems.

When you have an anxiety disorder, you may experience excessive worrying or intrusive thoughts, even when nothing, in particular, is going on.

There are several conditions that fall under the category of anxiety disorder. Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) describes persistent feelings of dread or uneasiness that last for months or years and interfere with your responsibilities.

Other conditions under the anxiety umbrella include:

  • Social anxiety disorder
  • Phobias
  • Panic disorder
  • Separation anxiety disorder

Having anxiety can also increase your risk for developing depression and other mental health conditions.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

You should schedule a diagnostic evaluation at the office of Melissa Quinn, MD, if you have persistent anxiety symptoms like:

  • Restlessness
  • Excessive worry
  • Negative, intrusive thoughts
  • Difficulties concentrating
  • Trouble falling or staying asleep

Dr. Quinn spends time reviewing your medical history, your current health, and the severity of the symptoms you experience. She also discusses your lifestyle and your relationships to identify triggers that worsen your anxiety.

Based on the results of your evaluation, Dr. Quinn designs a treatment plan to better manage your anxious feelings.

How is anxiety treated?

To ease your worrying and improve your concentration, Dr. Quinn can teach you mindfulness techniques like breathwork. Learning how to breathe more efficiently can calm your nervous system and minimize the physical effects of anxiety.

Other treatments for anxiety include:

Life coaching

Dr. Quinn also offers lifestyle coaching to help you reduce stressors in your life that trigger anxiety attacks.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)

You may also benefit from CBT which helps you recognize your own negative behaviors that contribute to anxiety. Therapy also gives you tools to better manage your symptoms and prevent additional anxiety attacks.

Supplement planning

Because your diet can also play a role in anxiety symptoms, Dr. Quinn works with you on a supplement plan to ensure you’re getting the essential nutrients your body needs to stay healthy.

Medications

If lifestyle changes and mindfulness strategies aren’t controlling severe anxiety symptoms, Dr. Quinn can prescribe antidepressants or antianxiety medications. She also specializes in ketamine infusion therapy to address treatment-resistant anxiety disorder.

Dr. Quinn continues to monitor your progress with medication management during in-office visits or online telemedicine appointments and can make adjustments as your symptoms improve.
